History: Jack grew up in rural Kentucky with two older sisters and a yellow lab. His father owned a farrier's business, and Jack often helped him and learned the trade. Shortly after he graduated from high school, his father died of a heart attack, and Jack inherited the business. Thus, Jack did not go to college. As he worked shoeing horses, his two older sisters got married. He was happy for them, but his mother was alone except for him and he worried about her. Not long after his eldest sister was married, she became pregnant and had a child. His mother became ill no more than a few weeks after her first grandchild was born, and because of her refusal to go to the hospital she died in the night. It was found on autopsy that her appendix had burst. All the children were devastated, and Jack moved out of and sold the home, but kept the business. Two years after his mother died, when Jack was 28, he was called out to a farm that bred Arabian horses and Saluki dogs. It was there that he met his wife, Malie. She was 24, and over a period of three years they fell in love, and got married. Her family was very proud of her for finding a good man, even if he had not gone to college. Malie would change that, though, and she encouraged Jack to attend night school. He got his business degree in about two years and then sold his farrier's business and bought a feed and tack store. Over the next eighteen years, Malie and Jack ran the store. They earned enough money to buy a cabin in the woods, which they felt was a good place to raise dogs. They had always wanted to breed dogs, but were not sure what kind of dogs to get as they both had entirely different experiences with dogs. They finally settled on Cocker Spaniels because they reminded Malie of the Salukis her family raised and they were hunting dogs, which Jack was used to. They researched and chose a breeder and got on a waiting list for the next litter at Rauling-Littles' Kennels. Then, Malie discovered that she was pregnant. Jack and her family were elated, and they thought how fortunate they'd be to have the puppies and the babies at the same time. Just in her second trimester, she miscarried. Everyone was devastated, but they continued to go on with their plans about the dogs. It wouldn't be right to stop their lives. At this time, Jack was 51 and Malie 47.
The litter of puppies came, and Jack and Malie picked out two little girls, Bluebird and her sister Ladybird. At three months both puppies came home, and when they were six months old they began training for Field trials. They were working with the live pigeons, learning how to carry them without hurting them. But problems developed with Ladybird, it seemed she was not suited to being a field dog. The breeder took Ladybird back to see if he could help, and as it turned out, she was much more suited for the show ring, so it was agreed that he could keep her. Jack and Malie brought Bluebird to visit her sister and still stayed in touch with the breeder. Bluebird worked on her field champion status over the next two years, and Jack and Malie worked on finding a suitable mate for her. Just shy of Bluebird's third birthday, Malie was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. The treatment, chemotherapy, would make her sick, and so Jack's younger (of the two) sister's husband stepped in to help Jack run the tack store in Malie's place. On his way home from work one day, Jack stopped by the shelter and picked up Sky. He brought the young cat home for Malie, to be her friend. She named her Lani, which is Hawaiian for sky, and loved her very much. (After a while, they changed her name to Sky since people did not pronounce it correctly, but Malie still called her Lani.) Jack and Malie still went ahead with their plans to breed Bluebird, and the resulting litter included Honeybee. Bluebird's breeder was very pleased with the resulting puppies, and the two litters in the years following, and even bought a few to add to his own kennel.
Only two years after she was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, Malie died.
Jack, Bluebird, and Sky got on as best as they could. Since Sky was closest to Malie she found it hard to adjust. Jack went on with his life, it was all he could do. But the loneliness took its toll on him, he bought Buckshot, and then slowly he realized how much he missed his sisters and his nieces and nephews. He planned and executed the move to Mushroom Grove, which is only forty-five minutes away from where his sisters live. In Mushroom Grove he found the little spaniel mix Change and had to rescue Honeybee from her abandonment. Though he will never be the same as when Malie was alive, he is getting through it, and he feels more at home now. He finds it nice to actually have neighbors.

Thereasa Collins
First and Last name: Thereasa Collins
Date of Birth: June 23, 1994
Sex/Gender: Female
Relationship Status: too young to date, in her eyes
Description: about 4'6" and growing, skinny and wiry like most young teens, dark brown hair, brown eyes. Very level-headed and practical personality, bright student, very rational person.
House/Home Type: Jack's house.
Previous Living Environment: House with her mom, Jack's older sister, Sara McArther-Collins.
Pets Owned: Is closest to Whirlwind.
History: Reasa has always been close to her Uncle Jack. Her father isn't a very nice guy, which is why Jack and his other sister routinely were involved in her life. Reasa is good in school, but is shy and doesn't have very many friends. She was always afraid to bring anyone over to her house because of her father's temper. Reasa is more rational about her feelings now than when she was younger. She knows her dad is a bad man, but she doesn't think all people are bad. Aside from being rather shy, she still is relatively well-adjusted.
She is staying with Jack in Mushroom Grove because her mom has finally had enough and has decided to divorce her father. To get her away from it, and because she's always loved her Uncle Jack and his dogs, her mom asked if she could stay with Jack, and Jack agreed.
