Raine
Call Name: Raine
Show Name: Ch. Crowley's Little Fall of Rain
Gender: bitch
Birth Date: November 30, 2000
Altered: yes
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Eye Color: brown
Markings: ASCOB (buff)
History: Raine was destined for the show ring, unlike Rauling-Little Kennels, Crowley Cocker Spaniels did not breed specifically for field dogs. James was always infusing show lines into his own field lines to create dogs to meet the goal of having dogs excel in both areas. Raine and R.L.'s Ruby Slippers (Buddy) were bred several times over the years, the last litter included Cysko.
Her trips around the country for the show ring are what she remembers best about her youth. Though the Crowleys did not handle her themselves, she liked her handler just fine, and he was a kind man. But it was a hectic life, even for cocker spaniels who like to have their days filled with interesting things to do. It seemed like the only times she wasn't traveling the country in a Winnebago were when she was at the kennel being bred or raising puppies.
When she was five, the Crowleys started to make noise about retiring her, and she was bred one last time to Buddy. James then bought Raine from Crowley Cocker Spaniels and spayed her, retiring her for good. James always liked her, and the Crowleys were glad to see her retire to a home that would take good care of her. She is very happy here, and though she does miss her old Kennel a little bit, she has come to think of James's dogs as her family too, and loves to romp around with the younger ones. All in all, she is glad that her life has slowed down, and that she's been taken in by someone who is the most kind open-hearted person she's met.
Personality: prissy about her coat, happy, kind, likes to swim, likes to romp with the younger dogs

Cotton
Call Name: Cotton
Show Name: none, unregistered
Gender: bitch
Birth Date: May 6, 2005 (not actual birthday, is shelter's best guess)
Altered: yes
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Eye Color: brown
Markings: Parti (blue roan)
History: Poor little Cotton was found as a two month old puppy on the street, dirty and scared. No one knew how she got there, and she was far too young to remember, but her owner had abandoned her, leaving her on the street because he didn't want to pay the fees at the shelter or take her back to her breeder. But the Samaritan who found her took her to the SPCA, and they took her to Memphis Cocker Rescue where she was placed with James Rauling as a foster home.
This was only the second dog he'd fostered, but fortuitously one of his kennel dogs had a litter who was approximately the same age. Cotton grew up with them as if she was one of their siblings. To this day she still believes she was born at the James's house as she doesn't remember anything else.
James had also had the same mindset, and when she came old enough to find her own home, James adopted her.
Being a Parti she is rather clownish and a very happy dog. She is far too ditzy to be any good at being a field dog, but she tries really hard to do the same thing her adopted family dogs do, bringing any object she feels is out of place to James with a doggy grin and a furiously wagging tail. It makes unloading groceries a hilarious chore for James, as if he sets the bags on the kitchen floor, while he goes and gets the remaining from the car, she will unpack them and bring everything she can carry to the outside door one at a time and leave them there. When James has parties during the holiday season, the guests bemusedly refer to her as the coat checking dog because she'll pick up their bags and coats if she can carry them and bring them either to James or someone at the party she's decided she likes -- whether it's their bag or not.
Cotton is very happy living with James, and she tries to get along with everyone she meets, man or beast. She remains a fuzzy black and white presence among the ASCOBS and Blacks of James's kennel and calls everyone her brother and sister no matter their age or relation to each other.
Personality: ditzy, silly, clownish, thinks she's just one of the field and show cockers, naturally charming though she doesn't realize it, sweet, kind, friendly, waggy, happy

Calypso
Call Name: Calypso
Show Name: not registered
Gender: bitch
Birth Date: Feb 20, 2008
Altered: yes
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Eye Color: brown
Markings: Parti (red and white extreme spotted. brown nose)
History: Calypso and Blue were both rescued from the same puppy mill. James fostered a handful of the dogs there, but he kept these two because he felt it would be too hard to find them a suitable or willing home, and he already knew he could keep and care for them properly.
The two dogs were a complete mess when they arrived in his care, mostly hairless and covered in all sorts of grime, not to mention all the infections they had. He had to quarantine them in the back room of his house until their infections were under control before he could let them be in contact with the other dogs.
After three months though, they didn't look like the same dogs who had arrived in his care. They were feeling better and their personalities began to shine through.
Calypso was named such because she, like most Partis, is rather hyper and silly. However, she takes it to a different level entirely since she is most likely inbred and definitely not bred for temperament. She just doesn't ever seem to stop, having a fountain of energy that seems to be geothermically propelled! She isn't destructive, but could be if left in the wrong situation, though inexperienced or unwilling owners would have a hard time containing her energy, James has found outlets for it in swimming and frequent walks and play time.
James figured out very quickly that she is eager and willing to learn new tricks, and is actually very bright, but her hyperactivity seems to cloud the intelligence from her.
She's a sweet and loving dog when she's actually calm, which is hardly ever, but she does have a big downside in that she fear bites. She's never hurt anyone, but the vet has to muzzle her just in case, and James has to be very careful when he grooms her. He tends to keep her coat short to avoid mats and any problems that may come from trying to get them out.
Personality: hyper to no end but not destructive, spastic, waggy, enthusiastic, rarely sits still, loves to play, loves to do tricks, likes to swim, fear biter

Birth Date: February 18 2008

Breed: Cocker Spaniel

Though dilute does exist in cockers, it's rare and only crops up every once in a while. But Blue wasn't the only dilute cocker at the puppy mill he came from, and so was probably inbred or linebred to produce a rare colour the millers thought would sell.
Despite his bad start in life, Blue has a wonderful, happy temperament. He's outgoing and gregarious and doesn't seem to have any problems at all. In truth he doesn't, not with his temperament anyway. Blue's bad breeding has come out in a different way, he is always sick.
He suffers from a thyroid problem, for which he takes pills, and also is constantly plagued by allergies and infections. His eyes are often getting infected, he seems to get a new hot spot every other month, and he is very susceptible to ringworm and has flea allergic dermatitis so must be kept on flea control year round. His poor health and many problems are the reason that James kept him, knowing that it would be difficult to find a new house that was willing to put up with multiple vet visits a month and medication for the life of the dog.
One thing that Blue does seem to particularly enjoy aside from fetch and walks in the woods, is swimming in the summer. James never lets him swim in stagnant water like lakes or ponds, though, because there are things like algae and bacteria that can irritate his skin. But Blue is just happy to jump into any source of water on a hot summers day, and James sometimes will fill a kids swimming pool on the screened in porch just for the dogs to play in.

History: Jack had not planned on breeding Whirlwind so soon, but when she came into heat Reasa felt bad for Whirlwind and pleaded with her uncle. Jack eventually relented, but on the condition that she take an active part in the planning and breeding. Mike offered up the stud dog for free, or said that he would pay the stud fees himself. Jack declined to have his friend pay the fees, but he did accept the offer of a Rauling Little stud. With Mike there to help, Jack explained the genetics in dogs, and the unique genetics of cocker spaniels to Reasa. They drew diagrams and used past litters from example. Then, they left Resa with a list of all the stud dogs at Rauling Little Kennels for her to go through and pick one. She narrowed it down to five dogs based solely on her genetics lessons, and then went to visit all of them with Jack one day. She eventually decided on Cysko, so all that had to be done was to walk one across town and put them in the yard together every day for a week. Reasa anxiously attended each vet appointment, and once ultrasound confirmed that there were to be five puppies, Jack told her to pick names for them. Excited, Reasa still took an entire weekend to ponder before she came up with naming them after some elements because she was studying the Periodic Table in school. Jack approved the names, and Reasa waited for them to be born with as much anxiety as if she was the one expecting.
The second to be born, Argon was the smallest of the litter, though she quickly caught up to her siblings and grew to be just as big as them. She was always sort of an independent type, though she would love playing with her siblings, she really just loved to sit next to someone and be pet and loved on, though she is not as accepting to outsiders as her siblings are, she has to get to know someone first before she warms up to them. She'll likely bond very closely to her owner, she already has a strong bond with Reasa.

The last to be born, Radon was the largest of the puppies, but soon her siblings caught up to her and they were all roughly the same size, though she was always a little bigger than the others. She was the most playful of them, inciting the others to play even in the middle of nap time. She loved running up and down the steps with Helium, and playing in the yard with the older dogs. Her playfulness and love of everything is catching, and she tends to make the best in others' shine. She should do well in either conformation or field work, or even both, as she's got the personality and the drive for both.
---
After Radon had not sold for a time, Reasa had begun to get attatched to the sunny little black and tan pup. Noticing this, Mike approached Jack and offered to Co-Own her. Jack agreed, and immediately began training Radon with Neon as a pair. Jack and Mike would enter competitions together with the two dogs, and even in the puppy trials started to win immediately. Once grown, the two would quickly accomplish their AFC titles and be on the road to their NAFC titles. But over the winter, Mike had started to enter Radon in conformation, and though she didn't win nearly as often as in field trials, she shows great promise, leading both men to hope that she'll be McArthur Field Spaniel's first Double Champion.

Show Name: RL's Like A Friend of Mine
Gender: bitch
Birth Date: April 23, 2009
Altered: no
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Eye Color: brown
Markings: ASCOB (orange)
History: Sire: Ch. Windy Knoll's Man-O-War (Manny)
Dam: NAFC R.L.'s It's a Jolly Holiday (Crumpet)
The plan to breed Crumpet to Manny had been in the works for almost a year. Everything was seeming to go as expected, and when Crumpet hit her peak in her heat, Mike drove with her (and the other dogs) up to Memphis to stay with his father while Crumpet was at Windy Knoll's kennel for the week. There was one serious flaw: Crumpet was scared to death of Manny. Why such an outgoing and happy dog was suddenly afraid when she never had been before Mike could only attribute to the hormones and the newness of being bred. After all, they'd never tried to breed her before. After trying to get the two together a few more times, Mike finally felt the best way to go about it was to artificially inseminate, and try breeding her the old fashioned way again next year once she had some more experience. The deed was done by the vet and poor Crumpet could be left alone for this breeding season. Not being bred while she was in her peak resulted in a relatively small litter of four, though all dogs were of sound and good quality and Mike had a hard time picking just one to keep.
Caroline was second born, but was the most reserved of the litter. Though she still has a friendly, outgoing cocker personality, she didn't feel that she should have to clambor to get attention, that if she just sat back and smiled, it'd come to her soon enough. As one of the calmer of the litter she also would make a great show dog. She also would do best as an only dog, as when she is away from the rest of the dogs, her true personality shines. She's developed a bond with Mike already.

Cherry was a potent personality from the beginning. Though Ilsa escaped the whelping box first, it was only because she stood on Cherry's back to do so. Much of the puppy squabbles were between Cherry and Ilsa, with Caroline and Love being drawn into it. Though always trying to force Ilsa into giving her a place in the spotlight, Cherry still had much better manners than Ilsa and didn't annoy the older dogs as much. She developed a tight bond with Crumpet and she was Mike's second pick. Cherry will fit in readily to a home with other dogs, and she will shine if given a chance to do field work, though she'd do well in the show ring as well. As she grows up though, things will become more complicated.
Personality: happy go lucky, confident, willing to please, likes attention (Note: This character is a lesbian.)
Show Name: RL's My Favorite Flavor
Gender: bitch
Birth Date: April 23 2009
Altered: no
Breed: Cocker Spaniel

Sassy and tough, little Ilsa was named for Ingrid Bergman's character in the film Casablanca. She was first born and also the first to escape the whelping box, though she was the smallest of the litter. She caught up to her sisters and brother, though, and amazingly was also the instigator of much of the squabbles and trouble the pups got into. Mike was no fool, though and saw the potential in her as a great show dog. She always was the one clambering hardest to get attention of any sort and though her lack of manners often irritated the older dogs, she was still always naturally the centre of attention and the most poised of the entire litter.

Tender
Call Name: Tender
Show Name: R.L.'s Love Me Tender of Memphis
Gender: bitch
Birth Date: Sept. 23, 2008
Altered: no
Breed: cocker spaniel
Eye Color: brown
Markings: ASCOB (lt. buff)
History: The premier dog from the premier kennel in Memphis was about to be neutered and retired. When James Rauling heard this, he immediately contacted Elite Cockers of Memphis and bought Memphis's Ghost at Graceland's gametes so he could use it in his kennel. Elvis P. is a triple champion in Conformation, Field Trials, and Obedience and the cost would be well worth the offspring. The gametes were shipped to his son Mike in Mushroom Grove so that he could inseminate Palo and Cricket. The two bitches did well with it, and sixty-three days later the two gave birth within hours of each other. It was clear from the beginning the litters would be star quality, but even Mike was surprised when the two litters totaled ten puppies!
Tender, along with her siblings Time, Teddy, and Treat were born to Cricket. Only Treat turned out to be buff, the other three were light buff like their mom. The puppies grew up happy, mingling with their half-siblings and extended family all around them.
Tender bonded close with the entire household, and it was a difficult adjustment for her once she was sold to Beth Collier at three months. She especially missed her mother, but luckily Mike didn't live too far away and the transition could be eased by some doggy play dates. She eventually bonded with her housemates, but continues to enjoy her visits with her family and especially the visits from Mike when he comes to help her and Beth learn to do Field Work.

Helium
Call Name: Helium
Show Name: McArthur's Noble Floating High
Gender: dog
Birth Date: may 2, 2009
Altered: yes
Breed: American Cocker Spaniel
Eye Color: brown
Markings: ASCOB mismark; cream
History: Sire: NFC R.L.'s Sweet Raine's Sugar Cane (Cysko)
Dam: AFC Arti's Swiftly Spinning (Whirlwind)
Jack had not planned on breeding Whirlwind so soon, but when she came into heat Reasa felt bad for Whirlwind and pleaded with her uncle.
Helium was the first born, and was also the first to try to leave the whelping box once they were able to. He always was exploring places he shouldn't be, and once he discovered the stairs, he made a game out of running up and down them. He was always the first one leading the puppy pack to greet and lick and jump on anyone coming through the door and if someone left the room, when he or she came back he'd greet them just as enthusiastically. This enthusiastic behavior likely will not change as he grows, nor will it be tempered with age, though good sound training will make it less of a nuisance. He will make a really horrible guard dog, the worst he'd do to someone is lick them to death.
Aurora heard about the litter through Mike Rauling and came to check the puppies out. Helium's bubbly personality quickly caught her fancy and she made room in the household for the puppy, much to her sister's exasperation. He got on well with the other canine members and was pleased to have another puppy to romp around with. Even though his activity level is a little much for Dawn, he seems to fit in well.
Dawn has quickly come to the conclusion that a romp with Melaney and frequent walks aren't going to cut it. She doesn't know what she's going to train this pup to do, but it'll at least start with tunnels and weaving bars, along with a healthy dose of 'sit stays.' Helium just treats it all as another fun game.

Kashmir
Call Name: Kashmir
Show Name: DC RL's Stars To Fill My Dream
Gender: dog
Birth Date: December 08, 2001
Altered: yes (retired)
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Eye Color: Light brown
Markings: ASCOB (light buff)
History: Kashmir was the last litter to be picked and bred by James Rauling's friend and business partner Robert Little before he died unexpectedly by a severe form of brain cancer. The puppies were born just a week after his death, and, being the pick of the litter, Kashmir was named after Robert's favourite song (Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir"). If there is any dog who can be said to be solely James Rauling's dog, it's Kashmir. He became the friend that James needed in Robert's absence and sometimes James would swear that Kashmir channels his friend if he believed in things like that (which he claims not to).
In any sense, Kashmir had a rather wonderful run as a stud dog at Rauling-Little kennels and a gained his National Field Champion title with apparent ease. He excelled in obedience and, after gaining a championship title in that area, became the first Duel Champion of Rauling-Little's history.
His first litter was Honeybee and Cricket's litter, and when he met Bluebird he fell in love with her. Though he sired many litters after that, she was never far from his mind. Any time that Jack would bring Bluebird to visit he was still electrified in her presence. He has grown ever fond of her over the years, and her him, but they have never said how they feel to each other, he gets ever closer each time he sees her.
Though he has only been visiting Mushroom Grove with James to see how Mike and the rest of his extended pack are coming, he hopes every time he can stay longer, get closer to Bluebird, and finally their hearts can be as one.
Personality: gentle, obedient, loyal almost to a fault, with a deep stubborn streak that only James can tame.

History: Cysko is one of the prized stud dogs at Rauling-Little Kennels. He had a normal puppyhood for a kennel pup and trained for both field and show. He isn't as enthusiastic about the show ring as he is about field work, and he has not attained a championship because of that.
Because he's a stud dog he likes to think of himself as a ladies man. He is not cocky, but he is sure of himself and he doesn't care too much for other male dogs. He is loyal to his friends and his kennel mates.
Mike brought Cysko with him when he moved to Mushroom Grove because any kennel needs at least one stud dog. Cysko finds the move just the ticket for him, he gets to play a new scene and meet some new ladies.

Call Name: Cricket

Gender: bitch

Breed: American Cocker Spaniel
Eye color: brown

History: Cricket was born to Bluebird along with her sister Honeybee. From the beginning, James Rauling had picked Cricket out as a present to his daughter Katharin, who really wanted her own dog to work and train. She was delighted with Cricket when the puppy was able to come home and took as much time as she could spare to train and work with her. Cricket earned her Field Champion title just before Katharin’s marriage started to fall apart.
Katharin, at least, was brave enough to get papers for a divorce, and move back home with her father, taking Cricket with her. The battle over estate, which included Cricket, was long and tedious. Her soon-to-be ex-husband was determined to take away not only everything he could, but also her happiness. He centered his frustration on Cricket. He argued that he’d spent just as much, and worked just as hard to train the dog (which was not true).
After several months of this arguing, James Rauling approached the attorneys with a compromise. He would take Cricket as his own dog and have the papers transferred to his name. That way she wouldn’t belong to either of them, but she would be guaranteed a good home. After a week of consideration, Katharin’s ex agreed.
The rest of the divorce proceedings went quickly after that since it was mainly finances, and Katharin could care less about that part. She just didn’t want Cricket to go to an abusive man like her ex. Finally, when everything was wrapped up, Katharin felt like she could breathe again, and Cricket noticed this change in her and felt relieved herself.
A few months later, Katharin’s ex got word that Katharin was still staying with her father. To him, Cricket hadn’t been taken away from her at all, and he was angry and determined to change that. He decided that one night he would try to steal her.
Cricket was not a stupid dog. She recognized the ex when he broke in that night, but she also remembered that every time Katharin had come home smelling like him and the lawyers, she’d held the dog and cried into her fur. The way the ex was sneaking around and whispering, and hadn’t turned on any lights didn’t seem right to her either. So, she started barking. Her barking woke the other dogs in the house up, and the dogs outside in the kennels, and the combined barking sent Mike and James dashing from their beds to find out what was wrong. The ex tried to run, but Mike caught him, and the police arrested him for breaking and entering and attempted burglary. Cricket seemed to understand by the attitude of the policemen who came that the ex would not be bothering them for a long while.
However, Katharin knew that she couldn’t truly escape the man and stay in Memphis. She moved out to California with a tearful goodbye to her beloved dog. Though she would visit often, it still wasn’t the same for her, not living near her family and not being in her home town.
Mike and James took care of Cricket and got her her National Field Champion title. Because of everything that happened to her, she was not bred until this year. When Mike planned to move to Mushroom Grove he took Cricket with him to give her a fresh perspective and so she could see her mom Bluebird and sister Honeybee.
Being a mother was exciting to Cricket, something she didn’t expect to like. Caring for the puppies and watching them grow up, knowing they were her own puppies and not a kennelmate’s was special to her.
Despite everything that’s happened to her, she doesn’t have a poor outlook on life. She is grateful for what she does have, but the most joyful moments of her life are when Katharin comes to visit, which set her to acting like a puppy again.
Personality: kind, gentle, active (but not hyper), hopeful, protective of her family

Crumpet
Show Name: AFC R.L.'s It's a Jolly Holiday
Call Name: Crumpet
Birth Date: February 13, 2007
Gender: bitch
Altered: no
Breed: cocker spaniel
Eye color: brown
Markings: ASCOB (orange)
History: Crumpet is young but holds great promise to become a wonderful dog for the kennel. She was the pick of the litter and she took to her field training readily and has already earned her Armature field champion title.
A typical young cocker spaniel, Crumpet just loves doing things. Field work gives her a way to channel that energy, and when she's not doing that, she's playing with one of her toys and jumping on Cysko. Yes, Cysko is her half brother and she will not let him forget it. She treats him with a bit more exuberance than the other dogs at the kennel, but she certainly enjoys playing with anyone who will do so.
Because of her great promise, Mike brought her to Mushroom Grove when he decided to move here. He holds out great hope that her future litters will hold just as much promise as she does.
Personality: plucky, cheerful, energetic, innocent, fun-loving

Love
Call Name: Love (sometimes Dr. Love)
Show Name: RL's The Cure You're Thinking Of
Gender: dog
Birth Date: April 23 2009
Altered: no
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Growing up with three sisters wasn't easy, and even the older dogs were mostly bitches. But Love somehow managed, and ended up having a more sensitive side to him which he's not afraid to show. He was always several steps behind his sisters in everything, being the last to leave the box, and the last to the bowl at meal time. It was mostly because he has amazing focus, and whatever task he's doing he is fully focused on. Mike recognized this from the beginning and knew he'd be an amazing field dog, and hopefully he would pass that trait down to any pups he might sire. As such, Mike decided to keep him as the pick of the litter. Love always smells the adult dogs when they come back from field work and he wants to be out there with them desperately. He doesn't yet believe the older ones when they tell him he'll get his wish, but he'll find out soon enough.
Personality: happy go lucky, focused, determined, willing to please, excitable, caring

Ladybird
Show Name: Ch. R.L.'s Moon Hit's Your Eye
Call Name: Ladybird
Birth Date: Dec. 31, 2000
Gender: bitch
Altered: yes
Breed: cocker spaniel
Eye color: brown
Markings: ASCOB (buff)
History: Ladybird was originally purchased with her sister Bluebird by Jack McArthur and his wife. She was a wonderful puppy with great personality, but when the time came to train them for field trials, Ladybird developed an issue. She was afraid of the pigeons, and would drop them or shy away any time they made a movement.
Jack immediately called James Rauling and asked for advice. James said he'd take Ladybird for a day or two to see if he could figure anything out. He determined that Ladybird probably would do better in show, and since James already knew that Jack didn't wish to show her, he said he would take her back with no hard feelings whatsoever. Ladybird and Bluebird would often visit each other over the years, and the two sisters remained close.
Over the years Ladybird trained for and did well in shows. She attained her championship and mothered several litters. She was the prize of the kennel, proving that the goal of Rauling-Little to breed dogs that did well in field and show was indeed met.
At age five Ladybird was spayed and retired. When Mike decided to move to Mushroom Grove, he brought her along with him so that she could be with Bluebird more often and maybe perhaps have some fun in a few small-town shows.
Personality: Sweet and kind, a little prissy about her appearance, easy-going, still acts like a puppy around Bluebird despite her age

Rose White
Call Name: Rose White
Show Name: unknown
Gender: bitch
Birth Date: Jan 14 2004 (not actual birthday, is the day that she was dumped at James's house and the best guess at her age)
Altered: yes
Breed: cocker spaniel
Eye Color: wall; right blue, left split (bottom half is brown, top blue)
Markings: Parti mismark - extreme white. All white except: black spot on nose, extending a tiny bit off the leather up the bridge; round black spot in centre of left ear; oval black spot on left side, three ribs away from end of ribcage. Right eyerim is pink; left eyerim is half pink, bottom half black; lips are speckled. Deaf in right ear.
History: Rose White herself will not speak of her past aside from saying she was once named Snowball and had two children to play with. What happened to her was that she was indeed owned by a family who had purchased her from a petstore for their kids. Once she grew up, however, the children no longer wanted to pay attention to her so she was tied in the yard with no shelter, and only food and water if the kids remembered to give it to her. She drank rain and ate snow to survive. The family purchased a small chihuahua for the children later on, and the dog never understood why Rose White was out in the yard. One day Rose White broke her rope tying her so she could seek shelter from a snowstorm under a car propped on cinderblocks in the back yard. It never occurred to her to run away, so desperate she was to get out of the cold. The father found her that morning under the car and decided to get rid of her. The mother wanted him to take her out and shoot her, but he couldn't do it, and he also couldn't bear to leave her at the animal shelter. He drove around with her for a long while before deciding to take her to James Rauling's house -- he is well known in the Memphis area to work with the Memphis Cocker Rescue, as well as personally rescuing many cockers himself. The father tied Rose White up to his house with a note saying that her family could no longer take care of her and asking that James please find her a home. James came out to find her that morning when he went to get his paper. He thought she was buff with a spot of oil or grease on her ear, so dirty she was. He took her inside and called the vet, got her washed and warmed up and then took her in to be checked over. He decided he'd keep her himself, and named her Rose White after a children's story he used to read to his kids.
Three years later, and Rose White is happy and healthy living with James. Though she doesn't ever speak of her previous life she's quite vocal about her new one. She loves Katharin and Mike just as if they were her own and loves James and is grateful to him for giving her a wonderful home.
After two of Mike's dogs go missing over the summer, Rose White will be sent down to keep Mike company, and will stay on here.

Betty
Show Name: AFC, FC R.L.'s Your Best Shot
Call Name: Betty
Date of Birth: April 12, 1998
Gender: bitch
Altered: yes
Breed: American Cocker Spaniel
Eye color: brown
Markings: ASCOB (buff) Has lightened considerably with her age, and her nose has become speckled with pinky-brown for the same reason.
History: Betty led the good life at Rauling-Little Kennels outside Memphis, Tennessee. She was one of their prized dogs even though she did not win her National Field Champion title, she did well and enjoyed her work. She also competed in a few conformation shows but James Rauling decided not to attempt to get her a championship title. She was bred several times over her years, the last litter she had produced Bluebird and Ladybird. She was spayed after that, at the age of five which is the general age that Rauling-Little spays/neuters their dogs.
Since then she became sort of the kennel "mom". She would be one of the first dogs that the puppies would be socialized with since she was very amicable towards the puppies. As she aged, she became partly deaf, and her patience went with it. Not being able to hear unless someone shouted at her wore on her nerves, and even though now she knows that she's actually deaf and the world didn't randomly get quieter, she still has her very grouchy moments. The fact that she has arthritis and it bothers her on cool mornings doesn't help her attitude much either.
When Mike Rauling decided to make the move to Mushroom Grove, he decided to bring her with him so that she could rest in the comfort of a home. She doesn't often go outside, mostly just to do her business, unless she is accompanying Mike to somewhere on lead.
Personality: Laid back and calm, wise, sometimes grouchy, has little patience for young dogs who haven't learned manners yet.

Teddy
Call Name: Teddy
Show Name: R.L.'s Lead Me Anywhere of Memphis
Age: Sept. 23, 2008
Gender: dog
Altered: no
Breed(s): American Cocker Spaniel
Eyecolor: brown
Teddy, along with his siblings Time, Tender, and Treat were born to Cricket. Only treat turned out to be buff, the other three were light buff like their mom. The puppies grew up happy, mingling with their half-siblings and extended family all around them.
Teddy is the pick of the litter, and Mike chose to keep him, the other three will be sold when they are three months old. Teddy will grow up to be a good dog in the show ring, and in the field, but he will prefer the show ring. Though he may be proud and confident, he is far from stuck up, and is exceptionally caring towards others and their plights.

Dream at first held promise for the show ring and the field, but she ended up not having the personality for either. She has enough energy, but isn't really interested in either of those things. Mike decided to keep her because she is such a cuddle bug and he really wanted a dog that was just his. He decided that he would spay her, just to keep her life simpler. She's far from a housepet though, Mike will work with her in obedience and agility, since she is so eager to please.

Palo
Call Name: Palo
Show Name: NFC R.L.'s Walking in Memphis
Gender: bitch
Birth Date: October 6, 2003
Altered: yes
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Eye Color: amber
Markings: ASCOB (liver)
History: Palo was the product of the combination of the buff line and the liver line from Rauling-Little Kennels. The resulting litter was the kennel's best litter to record, and Palo was the pick. Her call name is short for "pay load" since they felt they had hit the pay load with that litter.
Palo didn't enjoy the show ring except for its social aspect, and even though she did well there, they focused her more in the field. She was bred several times, but the results were mediocre at best. However the last time she was bred was a success. Heart, Dream, Charm, Ken, Dobe, and Goldie all inherited good genes from both parents and should turn out well.
She has bonded most close with Mike, and listens to him the most. That isn't to say that she wouldn't obey someone else, she just likes Mike best and feels he has more of a right to tell her what to do. This is why Mike took her to Mushroom Grove with him. Though she's still technically his father's dog, since the two have bonded so he feels like she's really his dog.
Palo enjoys life in Mushroom Grove with Mike. She has bonded closely with Cosette, and also with Cricket over their breeding experience. She enjoys being officially retired and loves her "job" at the Laughing Cocker Inn.
Personality: sweet, attentive, loyal, happy, slightly mischievous, loves attention, very protective of her pack

Show Name: McArthur's Noble Neon Lights
Gender: dog
Birth Date: May 2, 2009
Altered: no
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Eye Color: brown
Markings: ASCOB (lt. buff)
Neon is the third born and the only other son, Neon is the only ASCOB not mismarked. He showed great promise as a field dog once he started playing, trying to flush his toys by pouncing on them. Jack decided to keep him because of this. He'll grow up in the household and be trained to field work, and he'll also be used for a stud dog once he's older. Not that he really minds, he's pretty happy with whatever he's doing, wherever he is, and whomever is around and paying attention to him, since he's such a friendly sort.

Fourth born, her shining black coat made her stand out from her siblings from the beginning. It was obvious as she developed that she was the pick of the litter, and good for conformation. Reasa had picked her to keep from when she was born, and was pleased to find out that Jack thought her the pick of the litter. Reasa will keep Xenon by her side, and both of them will be learning about and going to dog shows with Mike and Jack. Jack hopes that Xenon will stun the judges and help get his kennel name out there.

Whirlwind
Show Name: Arti's Swiftly Spinning
Call Name: Whirlwind
Birth Date: October 14 2007
Gender: bitch
Altered: no
Breed: American Cocker Spaniel
Eye color: brown
Markings: Mismark; black and silver. Has inherited two chinchilla (chx) genes which cause the red in her tan points to be lightened to a bleached cream which appears as a light gray. Registrable, not showable.
History: Sire: Ch. Arti's Shake and Move (Quake; Black -- black and tan)
Dam: Arti's Sizable Conflagration (Firestorm; ASCOB -- cream)
Siblings: Arti's Fiercely Spinning (Dervish; ASCOB -- cream) and Arti's Wildly Spinning (Twister; ASCOB -- light buff)
Whirlwind was born to a lazy breeder in Memphis Tennessee who did not check his lines good enough. As a result, she was born with two Chinchilla genes and turned out black and silver. She was the only one in her litter to inherit two chinchilla genes, and her brother and sister where sold quickly.
She was sold at two months old to a lady who wanted a good dog for her daughter to show. But only a few months later when she found out that the colour was not able to be shown, the mother brought Whirlwind back and yelled until she got her money returned.
Her breeder tried to sell her, but no one was interested, and the older she became, the harder it was to get anyone to take a second look. Finally, he took her to the Memphis pound, papers and all, just after her first birthday. The pound was concerned about how afraid Whirlwind was, and called a Cocker Spaniel rescue group outside of Memphis and they came and got the terrified dog.
After a thorough evaluation they determined that she was only timid until she got used to her surroundings, and then she was a bright and joyful dog. They also determined that the only thing that she was actually terrified of was yelling, and considering her history they were not surprised by this.
They could see that she had potential and just because she couldn't show didn't mean she couldn't do something else her breed was bred for. They knew just the person to call, and that was James Rauling.
James Rauling in turn called his son Mike Rauling, but both men felt that they had enough dogs to deal with already. Mike, though, knew who would be perfect for Whirlwind, and called Jack McArthur. Eventually Mike persuaded Jack to take in the little girl, saying that since Sweet Pea was still way too young to be bred and both Bluebird and Honeybee were spayed, having an older young dog around would benefit his small kennel. She could also learn field work even though she couldn't show, and there was no telling how magnificent her offspring could be if bred to the right dog. Jack agreed and drove up to Memphis to pick her up. The rescue group was very happy that she was going to such a good home.
Whirlwind was slightly confused and disoriented by the long car ride, and was very shy and skittish when she first came to Jack's house. Bluebird warmed up to her immediately and was able to draw the little girl out of her shell with a squeaky ball. Whirlwind bonded with Bluebird and the two are rarely apart. They sleep side-by-side and seem to do everything together. She also has a crush on Buckshot, but she would never tell anyone.
Personality: terrified of yelling, timid, shy, and cautious, unsure of new situations, but friendly, playful, and joyful when you get her out of her shell.

Sweet Pea
Show Name: McArthur's Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa of Rauling-Little
Call Name: Sweet Pea
Birth Date: June 12, 2008
Gender: bitch
Altered: no
Breed: American Cocker Spaniel
Eye color: brown
Markings: ASCOB (lt.buff)
History: Sire: FC R.L.'s Sweet Raine's Sugar Cane (Cysko)
Dam: AFC McArthur's Pour Some Sugar on Me (Honeybee)
Sweet Pea was born via a cesarean section to Honeybee. Though she knows that he is not her genetic father, she's been told by Bee that the big red Rhodesian Ridgeback Jared is her real father. She's quite pleased that she can count the dog in her family, for she likes him quite a lot.
She loves her mother and Bluebird and gets along fine with Change and Buckshot. Though she hadn't met them before, she's quite pleased to be counted in outings among the new puppies born to Mark Rauling's Palo and Cricket. She rather prefers being among her own breed to being among others, just because she understand where the other cocker spaniels are coming from better. When she gets older, perhaps this will change.
With Whirlwind, she is starting to train for field work. She is also starting to learn a bit about the show ring, for she will do both as she grows up. She is anticipating the day she gets to go to her first puppy class. She is sure that she will win best in show since she has such a wonderful lineage.
Personality: determined, undeterred, prissy, snotty, sometimes rude, sticks up for herself, proud of her lines

Honeybee
Show Name: AFC, NAFC McArthur's Pour Some Sugar On Me
Call Name: Honeybee
Age: June 23, 2003
Gender: bitch
Altered: yes
Breed: American cocker spaniel
Eye color: brown
Markings: ASCOB (lt. buff)
History: Honeybee was born of Bluebird's first litter. The owners she went to were friends of Jack and his wife, however they ended up losing contact with Jack after his wife died. Honeybee participated in field trails earning her Amateur Field Champion and National Amateur Field Champion titles but her owners stopped competing several wins shy of her Field Champion title. She has never been bred, but they saw no reason in spaying her, in fact, at one point in time they simply stopped caring about her. She wasn't fed enough, though she wasn't out-right starved, nor was she payed enough attention to. This went on for years, but Honeybee never complained openly about it, simply accepted it as the way it is. Eventually, a little after her fifth birthday, they drove her out to a wooded lot, tied her to a tree and left her there. Not one to be put off, Honeybee chewed through the rope holding her and tried to find her way back home, but was hopelessly lost. Eventually she was picked up by the SPCA, for which she was grateful for. They washed her, shaved her tangles off, and gave her her first real meal in a long time. Jack's name was on the microchip information so he was called and drove the two hours to get her and bring her back to his new home in Mushroom Grove.
She was happy to be back with her mother, but had a hard time accepting everything that had happened to her and that she wasn't going to be going back to her old home. After all this time, though, she has come to accept it. Jack is her real owner, and she knows she won't go hungry or wont of attention while she lives with him.
Just a couple of months after she ended up in Jack's care, she was bred with the star stud dog of Rauling-Little Kennels Cysko. After two more months she gave birth via cesarean section to Sweet Pea. She adores her daughter as much as Bluebird does, and finds her attitude endearing.
Honeybee has hated Cysko since she met him, and so has told Sweet Pea that her real father is Jared, the big red Rhodesian ridgeback that has taken Bee's heart. She did explain that he's not her genetic father, but he's the one who has payed the most attention to her and the only one worthy of that role.
She doesn't mind the addition of Whirlwind to their home, and in a way empathizes with the poor dog who has also had not the most perfect of pasts. In the end, Honeybee is just grateful that things have turned out okay for everyone.
Personality: Determined and not deterred easily. Generally easy-going and active (but not hyper), though she is easy to make grouchy.

Change
Show Name: None
Call Name: Loose Change (Mostly called Change)
Age: July 2007
Gender: dog
Altered: yes
Breed: Cocker spaniel mix
Eye color: Brown
Markings: Red and white. Head is white, there is a red patch over each eye and ear making a white blaze that does not break to the back of his head, and covers most of the back of his head. His neck is white. His body is white with a red patch like a saddle over his shoulders, back, and hips, extending not past half of his body's height from brisket to withers. His tail is not docked; the red patch on his back extends to the base half but does not meet on the underside (the underside being white), the tip half of his tail is white.
History: Change and his seven red-and-white brothers and sisters were born of a red-and-white cocker spaniel mother to a nice family who cared for them and their mother until they were a little over two months old. They put a sign in their yard saying "Puppies, free to good home" and placed the puppies in a pen in their front yard and waited. Children came clinging to their parents arms, and one by one over a period of a few days they were all adopted. Change was one of the last to be adopted, but he was not scared, being one of the bolder of the litter. He enjoyed his new home and his new boy until one hot, dry day. The boy took him out for a bike ride, setting him in the basket on the handlebars. Change enjoyed it until the bike hit a bump in the road and he was thrown out. He yelped and cried, but was not seriously injured, more scared. The boy did come back, but instead of picking him up, he simply turned home and left him there. Change cried, but the boy didn't come back that day. As night fell, he curled up on the side of the road and slept. The next day he was on the move, and after a few days had wandered into Mushroom Grove. His second day there, it started to rain, and Change huddled in a corner, crying. That is when Jack happened to walk by and find him, scooping him up and holding him in his jacket. He took him to the MGSPCA, thinking to leave him there, but as he walked, he thought better of it and decided to get him checked out by the vet and keep him. He named him Loose Change because he appeared to be discarded and forgotten like it.
Change fit into the household well, and even through the additions of Honeybee and Sweet Pea, he has not felt anything but increasing joy. He still is upset that Jack neutered him, but he should forgive and forget after a time. While he was neutered Jack had his blood drawn for a genetic test and found out that he was half Cocker Spaniel and half unknown mix, which delighted man and dog both.
He's gone through his training for field trials and is almost ready to compete in one. With the addition of Whirlwind, he has a friend near his age, and someone just as inexperienced to practice field trials with. He's beyond delighted by all the happenings since he was adopted by Jack and is grateful for all of it.
Personality: Very much a classic spaniel puppy, he is bold and daring, active and playful, but hates to be left alone. He doesn't know he's a little dog still, for instance he'll not give up trying to carry a tennis ball in his mouth even if it is nearly as big as his whole head.

History: Bluebird was "the pick of the litter" one could say, showing great potential from when she was a few months old. She went on to compete and win several titles in field trials, and also bore several litters, some of the pups from which went on to win their own NFC and NAFC titles. She was retired at age five, then spayed at age six just before Jack bought Buckshot. Though, you can never really retire a hunting dog, so Jack used her to help junior handlers and his nieces and nephews get a feel on field trials and hunting. Since Buckshot's arrival, she found herself being a momma dog to a very over grown puppy, and if he found himself on a misadventure, she was either right by his side or not far behind. Jack and her have developed a close bond as well, and she feels very protective of Sky.
Just after they moved to Mushroom Grove, Jack brought home a spaniel mix puppy he named Change. Being a mother several times over, she was quite pleased to have a puppy in the house and did her best to teach him everything a dog needs to know. If that weren't enough, her daughter was returned to Jack after so many years, and then was bred giving birth to a single puppy. Bluebird was very proud of Honeybee and absolutely adores Sweet Pea.
But that was not the end of the excitement for Bluebird, her breeder's son Mike moved to Mushroom Grove brining with him much of her extended family. Suddenly her life has become a hundred times more interesting and she is filled with youth and joy once more.
The icing on the cake was when Jack brought home a mismarked cocker spaniel named Whirlwind. The young dog was quite afraid of this new situation, but Bluebird was able to pull her out of her shell. Since then the two have become nearly inseparable. They're always side-by-side, and Bluebird looks to these events as a sign that better times will be ahead for her and Jack.
Personality: Kind, attentive, alert, watchful, happy but calm, active but not hyper, somewhat prissy about her coat.
