Everything you need to know about Jake
Jake's life and times
Jake had a rather normal, boring mutt-dog life in the States with a lovely family. He liked his kids, he liked his humans, but he was also young and nieve and wandered away one day, getting lost. Eventually, through a series of owners and events, he ended up in the UK where he again wandered away and got lost. (You would think he'd learn by now, but being hopelessly clueless at times is one of my faults sooo...) Out on the Scottish moors, Jake met one of those "black mystery cats" of the UK and ended up nearly being killed by that encounter. Being a reaper by nature and trade, Kounrix was drawn to Jake's impending death. But when he got there he realized Jake's soul wasn't ready to die, and it wasn't his time. So he gave his blood, and blood from two of his friends (a Cait Sith and a Kelpie) to bring him back. Jake has stayed with Kounrix since then.
But like all things to do with Fae magic, there are negatives along with the positive that Jake is still alive from that blood. When he is in his normal form, if he is exposed to fae blood (i.e. it gets on him, or he gets a good whiff of it), he will unconciously transform into Sote's entry. Needless to say when you live with a Cu Sith, and are involved in fae shenanegans, that's a serious risk to take. I want Jeanene's entry to be something he can conciously transform into if he is angry enough. He is also able to change into a human form because of an enchanted bracelet that kounrix got for him.

Jake and Kounrix together
Jake is a theif. He doesn't do it intentionally, rather he doesn't understand that he is stealing. Even if he takes human form he still thinks like a cat-dog. He doesn't get that he can't just take things he finds and likes. After all he has spent most of his life on his own outside, and he could always take whatever rock or stick or feather he liked to see with no one complaining. Kounrix understands to some extent that Jake is stealing, but in an abstract way. He understands it bothers humans and it's against their code of morals, but he doesn't give a damn... he's not misanthropic, he's just an old, magical creature that doesn't have much to do with humans. Regardless, he doesn't bother Jake about it. Though he doesn't like that Jake keeps bringing home tons of useless objects.
Jake gets left alone a lot. He cannot go with Kounrix when he goes reaping, because Jake cannot use fae magic to conceal himself, despite the large amount of fae blood he's consumed. Kounrix has to go reaping because it's part of his nature, he needs it to survive, and he needs to do it to please the Fae King. He gets paid to do it, so it's a necessity. Jake has adapted to being alone, he goes on his own adventures. He's met a lot of interesting creatures, strange and rare types of fae, and living legends and mysteries in those moors. He has an active immagination and so Kounrix dismisses most of what Jake says as something he read or came up with.
Despite that, whenever Jake can go with Kounrix somewhere, he takes him. Kounrix wants as many fae as possible to meet Jake and know of him from more than just a rumor, because he wants them to see how little of a threat Jake really is. Jake is not aware of this, not explicitly. He will say that some of the fae he meets scare him, and he will say that he is afraid when Kounrix isn't there with him, but he can't express why in words. It's in the back of his mind but he can't express it. Still, he is well aware that he is safe right now, and that Kounrix is protecting him.

The Fae King
The Fae King is much more innocuous than Jake immagines him to be. He thinks of him as a big, evil-looking creature that wears shadows like a cloak. What he really looks like, Jake does not know, and will never know. Kounrix doesn't want to explain the king to Jake because he doesn't want Jake's interest piqued any more than it already is.
Jake cannot ever see the Fae King because the power the Fae King weilds will take that fae blood inside of Jake and change Jake into a full-fleged fae. The Fae king won't do it on purpose, its just the presence of that power will transform Jake, and not in a good way. He won't ever look or think the same again. He'll be forced to feed on humans or other creatures in some way -- blood, soul, energy, fleash -- and will die if he does not. The Fae King knows this, and until he knows that Jake would be useful as a fae -- or Jake wants to be a fae -- he will not force Kounrix into bringing Jake to him.
But the Fae King isn't one hundred percent pleased with what Kounrix did. It's Kounrix's job to end lives, not save them. So he has his ways of spying on Jake without actually affecting Jake's life in any way, and does so. Right now he spies in the form of two very large rooks, who are fae themselves, and know a thing or two about remaining unseen -- as they can become invisible to both fae and non-fae eyes.
Not all the fae work for the fae king, but those that do always recieve something in return. Kounrix receives cheese, coins, gemstones, and some enchanted objects that he is welcome to keep and use for himself or sell to other fae. Every now and again, using the information that the two rooks give him, he sends something special along for Jake. Kounrix doesn't question it, because he knows that the Fae King has vast knowlege of things, and doesn't even suspect that the King could be watching them. Though maybe, in the back of his mind he knows, he just can't admit it to himself.

Fae Friends
Jake has a few fae friends of his own. Kounrix has many fae friends but these are the ones that Jake counts as his.
Nessie. Yes, the Loch Ness Monster. Jake goes to visit her often, at least once a week, and the two of them sing songs and talk of lands far away. Nessie tells Jake all sorts of legends and stories, and she finds him interesting objects from the lake or shore to add to his hoard of stuff. Needless to say he almost always visits her in the dead of night, because while he doesn't understand that humans don't know she exists, he does understand the need to not be seen. He knows a little bit about that himself.
Murigen. Murigen is the Kelpie which gave her blood to help bring Jake back. She lives in the little lake near where Jake and Kounrix's home is. She has taken a shine to Jake, seeing him as an eager participant in all types of activities and eagar to learn many things. Jake's not too keen on swimming but he will stay in the shallows, and the two of them will fish or search for things on the lakebed. Muirgen helps keep Jake safe, not just because she has been friends with Kounrix for most of his one hundred years, but because she is fond of Jake too.
Rigantona. Also called Rhia or Rig. She is the twin sister of the Cait Sith that gave her blood to Jake. Rig's sister was killed in an unrelated incident before Jake recovered, but Jake isn't aware of all the details. No one wanted to trouble him, and he thinks that she died before he met Rig but after he was healed. Rig is extremely mischivious with Jake. She often takes him to chase sheep in the fells, and into the city as a human to mingle. Being a Cait Sith she is also a reaper, so is also travelling a lot. She often does jobs with Kounrix and so that's how they met, however Kounrix is not as close with Rig as he was with her sister. Rig adores Jake like he's her little brother, and is quite intent on teaching Jake the ways of a Cait Sith. Kounrix disapproves, and doesn't want Jake dragged any farther into Fae world than he already is, so tries to keep Rig and Jake alone time to a minimum. Jake isn't aware of it. But Rig means well and even Kounrix knows that, he just is overcautious.
The Cobbs. The cobbs are a group of fae that, you guessed it, are cobblers. There are cobbs in every shoe store in the UK, and other places, but with the lack of cobblers anymore, they don't often get to do what they love -- fixing shoes and crafting things. There is a group of them that works for the fae king making, mending, and cobbing anything that the rest of the Fae come across. In return the Fae King gives them broken shoes. This group of Cobbs love Jake, as he brings them things he finds that are broken, or things in his hoard that end up being broke. Every now and again Kounrix's leather satchle he carries needs mending too. It was on one such occasion that Jake met them. He returned on his own to have them make his Tristian and Isolde plushes and comes back every now and again to visit and watch them work. He's fascinated by the little creatures, and loves the stories they tell.
